This week, we’ll be exploring what is required to become a construction foreman.

The Road to Becoming a Construction Foreman

We all remember the scene in Spiderman where Peter Parker’s uncle tells him “with great power comes great responsibility”. He wasn’t talking about being a construction foreman, but the phrase still applies. A foreman is in charge of planning, organizing, and coordinating building projects from beginning to end. The foreman is active in every stage of the building process, and they are responsible for handling budget, personnel, quality, and client satisfaction. If you want to become a foreman, you’ll have to be good at delegating tasks, have a wide breadth of knowledge related to the building process, and have a few years of experience in the industry under your belt.

Education

Some construction companies will only require a construction foreman to have a high school education, a few years of experience in a management position, and experience working with some of the technical aspects that will be involved in the construction projects. Other companies will require that the applicant have a formal education, such as an associate’s degree in construction management. Getting a formal education will give you an edge over the competition, but also remember that it’s important to work a few jobs where you’ll get hands-on experience with the technical aspects of construction before applying to foreman positions. Advancement

Being a foreman is all about being an expert in your field and a good leader. You can set yourself apart and land better positions either by choosing a niche, such as becoming a grading foreman, or by pursuing an advanced four-year degree in a relevant field, like engineering, construction science, or architecture. These steps are taken after you’ve already been working as a foreman and want to take your career to the next level. A career as a construction foreman–whether you are a supervisor, manager, or expert in one specific field–is hugely rewarding.
