Signs of Poor Commercial Stormwater Management

Are your commercial stormwater systems failing? We can help!

Stormwater management systems are mostly hidden from view, only visible by inlets, grassy trenches, and scenic ponds or waterways. These subtle utilities play a huge part in protecting roads, buildings, and landscapes from washing away when it rains heavily. The design of stormwater management systems is highly important for commercial properties, which host many more building occupants than residential ones. Unfortunately, these systems can go bad or have an improper design. What are the signs of poor commercial stormwater management?

Flooding

Flooding is the most common and the most destructive sign of poor commercial stormwater management. A flood can damage building foundations and be strong enough to wash out roads and damage other pavements. It could also block roadways or cause hydroplaning or other accidents. If the property floods every time it rains, a faulty stormwater management system could be to blame. The solution could be as simple as unclogging or as involved as a redesign.

Stagnant Water

If the property floods and the water does not subside, you are left with stagnant water, which can lead to insect infestations in summer. Another possible source of stagnant water would be a retention pond without proper maintenance. A retention pond should have means to prevent stagnation and insect larvae growth, such as aeration and insecticides.

Overgrown Detention Ponds

On the other hand, detention ponds, which are designed to drain water slowly into the soil, can also cause flooding when they become overgrown with plants and weeds. When detention ponds become overgrown, the dense root growth can prevent rainwater from draining through the sandy, loamy soil. Regular tending and mowing will put an end to this problem. If it does not, then there could be a design issue.

Erosion

When floodwaters disappear, they will leave behind eroded land and pavements. Even small flooding can slowly cause deterioration. Well-designed stormwater management systems will prevent erosion and prevent erosion even in their installation process.

A Note of Non-Compliance

Your municipality or other governmental entity in charge of enforcing commercial stormwater management maintenance may give you a note of non-compliance if these issues arise. Reliable Contracting can help your Maryland property have the best stormwater management systems.
