How To Drive Safely This Winter

You need to protect yourself when you are about to drive in cold or snowy weather.

Winter is upon us! Many experts have predicted that it is going to be a snowy year in Maryland and surrounding states. Now is a great time to go over some safe driving practices to ensure you know what to do when you are driving in unfavorable conditions over the next few months. Here are just a few tips on how to stay safe while on the road this season.

Preparation

Check Your Vehicle Maintenance

It can’t be overstated how important vehicle maintenance this time of year. The better you maintain your vehicle, the better it will handle inclement weather situations. You want to be sure to check your tires, battery, windshield wipers, and antifreeze throughout the season. Many drivers forget to do so, and they wind up regretting it.

Always Have The Essentials

You want to be sure to keep the essentials in your vehicle at all times. This includes cellphone, flashlight, batteries, jumper cables, blankets, and a first aid kit. Keep these items in your vehicle in either the truck, backseat, or glove compartment. You never know when they will come in handy.

Plan Out Your Route

It is important to plan around the weather this time of the year. Before you take off in your vehicle, you should know how long of a drive it should be and plan accordingly. If it is a long drive, research places where you can stop for gas, food, and anything you may need along the way. This will also give you peace of mind when you are driving in unfavorable conditions.

Protection

You need to protect yourself when you are about to drive in cold or snowy weather. Be sure always to wear your seatbelt and ensure that your children are properly strapped in as well. Also, children under the age of 12 should be sitting in the backseat. When driving, keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. It is significantly harder to stop when the roads are slippery so try to keep at least a 4 second distance from the car in front of you.
