A Baltimore Asphalt Contractor using Recycled Materials

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmentally friendly paving, we are constantly looking for new and better ways in which to serve our clients. And what better way to help serve you than by better educating you on the growth of recycled and reclaimed materials in pavements.

Categorizing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP)

Because reclaimed asphalt pavement comes from a variety of sources, it must first be physiochemically characterized prior to use in mixes.

1. What virgin aggregates does the RAP contain?

2. Do deleterious materials exist?

3. How much residual asphalt remains after years of exposure to the elements and oxidation?

4. How much liquid binder will the residual asphalt replace when reused in fresh asphalt mixes?

If RAP is to be used as a road base or fill, a detailed analysis is less critical. For these applications, research tends to focus on two topics:

1. The leaching of pollutants into groundwater.

2. The long-term performance of the roadway.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) promotes the use of recycled asphalt in the construction of roadways to help reduce waste, preserve the environment, and also reduce construction costs.
