Storm Water Management: Contributing Factors and what you need to know

Friday, August 17th, 2012

When it comes to storm water management, there are several contributing factors that you need to be aware of, factors that can directly affect maintenance of storm water systems. These contributing factors include:

  • Aesthetics: A storm water management system cannot be an eyesore, especially if it is located in a community. A storm water management system needs to seamlessly blend into the environment.
  • Landscaping: Certain types of vegetation can directly affect the performance of storm water management systems.
  • Upstream Conditions: Erosion and high traffic areas located upstream can add significantly to the amount of sediment.
  • Cost: Enough money has to be allocated for the regular maintenance of storm water facilities.
  • Safety: Because these storm water management systems involve the storage of large amounts of water and because they are most often located in rural areas, safety (signage, fencing, etc.) needs to be of the upmost concern.
  • Professional Maintenance: Poorly designed, improperly constructed, and inadequately maintained utility infrastructures can lead to major environmental damage from flooding and erosion.  Storm water management and the maintenance of storm water management facilities requires the expert knowledge of a professional, like Reliable Contracting.

Factors Affecting Maintenance of Storm Water Management

FAQs about Storm Water Management & the Construction Industry

Friday, August 10th, 2012

What is Storm Water?

Storm water refers to water from a number of different sources, including rain, melted snow, and any other form of precipitation that comes into direct contact with the ground.

What is Storm Water Management?

Storm water management includes all functions associated with planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, financing and regulating the facilities that collect, store, control and convey storm water.

Why is Storm Water Management Important?

Because water cannot naturally reach the soil through many of the manmade structures we have erected, including roads and buildings, the storm water is forced to flow through manmade drainage systems, picking up toxic debris and other pollutants in the process.

What are Storm Chambers?

Storm chambers are manmade storm water management systems designed to do the following:

  1. Retention: Storm chambers allow construction sites to hold storm water to for proper disposal.
  2. Detention: Detention refers to temporary retention. In this instance, storm water is held temporarily to allow construction personnel to slowly spread it to other places and prevent flooding.
  3. Conveyance: Storm chambers can be used to transfer storm water from a construction site to a more appropriate area.
  4. Recharge: Recharge is an important part of the storm water management process, in which water from the surface works its way into the subsurface, replenishing groundwater supplies.
  5. Reuse: Storm water management system allow storm water to be recycled and reused in efficient ways.

Excavation & Grading: The Initial Two Step in any New Asphalt Construction

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

New asphalt cannot be laid on top of damaged asphalt. Before road, highway, or parking lot construction can take place, the existing asphalt structure must be excavated and then graded. These steps are crucial in the overall construction process.

  • Excavation: The existing asphalt must be removed. Excavation is the process of preparing the prospective location of the driveway for the asphalt that will eventually be laid.
  • Grading: Now the area must be shaped, creating the proper pitch in the underlying material so that water drains properly once the asphalt is in place.

Do you have an asphalt paving job that involves Excavation and Grading? If so, give Reliable Contracting a call!

Wegmans:Opening in Gambrills this August. Are you excited?

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Greenberg Gibbons Commercial Corp. and Reliable Contracting are nearing completion of their 1.2 million-square-foot, $275 million addition to the Village at Waugh Chapel, which will comprise of several major retailers, including Wegmans.

“The project, we’ve always felt, was going to be very successful from the very beginning,” said Reliable Contracting President Jay Baldwin.

Village South is one of the largest planned developments to start in Greater Baltimore since before the Great Recession.

“It’s a very positive sign,” said commercial real estate broker Rene Daniel. “It’s one of the largest projects going on the East Coast, not just Baltimore.”

But there was a time when developers were struggling to attract tenants to fill up their retail space. Luckily, once Wegmans signed on, several other tenants jumped at the chance to be a part of Village South.

Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale explained that the company only opens one or two new stores a year and is very particular in choosing its location.

“There are really three or four primary things that we look for, and in this instance they all came together,” said Natale.

These factors include:

  1. Location
  2. The number of people living nearby
  3. The ability to be a regional draw for potential shoppers

Other future or recently opened Wegmans stores in Maryland include: Landover, Frederick, Bel Air, Columbia, and Germantown.

If you have any questions about the New Wegmans in Gambrills or if you have a construction project that you need completed right the first time, please contact Reliable Contracting by calling 410-987-0313 or visit our website.

Admixtures Change PCC Performance :: Concrete Contractor in Maryland

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

The most widely used structural material for transportation infrastructure and pavements in Portland cement concrete, or PCC. And in order to achieve a PCC mixture that is workable, durable, and of high quality, mineral and chemical admixtures must be applied.

All about Admixtures

  • Chemical Admixtures: The most common chemical admixtures are air-entraining agents, water reducers, superplastics, retarders, and accelerators. All of these admixtures can affect PCC in several ways, including: managing its rate of early hydration and regulating its fluid properties.
  • Mineral Admixtures: Common mineral admixtures include fly ash, silicia fume, and microsilicia. These admixtures are added to concrete to enhance its workability; to improve resistance of concrete to thermal cracking, alkali-aggregate expansion, and sulfate attack; and to enable a reduction in cement content or water.

National Work Zone Awareness Week :: Maryland Highway Construction

Friday, June 8th, 2012

The fact that work zone fatalities are the lowest they have been in 30 years is cause for celebration. But, as U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood points out, this is certainly no time to ease up on work zone safety awareness efforts.

“We’ve made a lot of progress reducing fatalities for construction crews working on our nation’s roads, but even one death is too many,” said Secretary LaHood. “It’s critical for drivers to slow down, look for changes in traffic patterns and watch for the men and women who are working to improve our nation’s highways and bridges.”

National Work Zone Awareness Week Kickoff

National Work Zone Awareness Week is an annual campaign designed to promote motorist and worker safety and mobility issues in work zones.

“Dedicated workers are building and maintaining the roads and bridges we rely on every day to get us where we need to go safely,” said Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez. “The least we can do as drivers is to keep them safe by obeying posted speed limits. We must also pay extra attention in work zones, which means putting away our cell phones and watching out for any changes to normal road conditions.”

Highway Safety Statistics

  • Work zone fatalities reached their highest point in 2002, 1,186 deaths.
  • In 2010, highway work zone fatalities fell to 576-the least since 1982.
  • Work zone fatalities have been cut in half over the last 10 years.
  • In 2010, states reported 37,000 work zone-related injuries.
  • On average, four people are injured in a work zone every hour.

Road Construction Safety Tips :: Reliable Contracting of Maryland

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Road construction is all around us, from the back roads of Southern Maryland to the city streets of Baltimore, the highways, and every road in between. Consequently, construction projects and road work like this produces physical obstacles and other such hazards for drivers, increasing the risk of an accident.

Accident Liability and Construction Crews
If an accident occurs because of improper warnings, contradicting signs or signals, poorly lit construction zones, or other such negligence, the government jurisdiction responsible for the roadway construction could be held liable. This is because construction crews have a responsibility to properly warn drivers of impending traffic changes to help keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible.

Still, while construction crews are required to utilize proper signage, reflective barricades, flashing lights, and other warnings to alert drivers, sometimes it is not enough to prevent accidents.

Potential Road Construction Hazards
• Merging: When lanes are closed, drivers may be required to merge into fewer lanes without much notice. This sometimes creates problems, especially during periods of heavy traffic.
• Little Room for Error: With construction sites, barricades, and walls, there is little room for driver error. And in such close quarters, one little mistake can cause a big problem.
• Debris: A byproduct of construction is debris. And while construction crews do what they can, from time to time, pieces of debris end up in the roadways.

Please be safe and stay alert when navigating construction sites!

If you have any questions about Road Construction Hazards or if you have a construction project that you need completed right the first time, please contact Reliable Contracting by calling 410-987-0313 or visit our website.

Construction Industry News: EPA Trying to Pass New Stormwater Rule

Friday, May 11th, 2012

The Environmental Protection Agency recently created a general permit for stormwater runoff from construction sites. The new permit – titled the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)  - went into effect on February 16, 2012.

For more information, refer to the following: FR Notice (PDF) (8 pp, 180K).

The 2012 CGP replaced the 2008 CGP, which expired on February 15, 2012. This new permit will provide coverage for eligible new and existing construction projects for a period of five years.

Features of the 2012 Construction General Permit (CGP)

• The 2012 CGP includes a number of modifications to the 2008 CGP, many of which are necessary to implement the new Effluent Limitations Guidelines and New Source Performance Standards for Construction and Development point sources, known as the “C&D rule.”

• Does not include turbidity limits.

For background on the EPA’s original rule and related legal wrangling, see EPA to Reconsider Key Aspect of Construction Stormwater Rule, by attorneys Meline MacCurdy and Russell Prugh of Marten Law (September 30, 2010).
