The Status of the Highway Trust Fund

highway trust fundWe’re proud to say that we are a company that staffs hundreds of employees. Being able to do our part to keep the unemployment rate down and employ people from all walks of life is a big part of our vision as a company. The Highway Trust Fund is a piece of what allows us (and thousands of other road construction companies) to do this. Unfortunately, the Highway Trust Fund is currently under fire by a Congress that is having a difficult time deciding on much of anything. You may remember that a few of our employees attended Rally for Roads in DC this past June (read more about that here).

What’s New with the Highway Trust Fund?

The big problem is finding funding for the Highway Trust Fund. It currently gets funded through the use of a fuel tax, but it just isn’t covering the amount of work that needs to be done on America’s roadways. Many activists and different federal departments are working to figure out where the money is going to come from. One problem that arises nearly every time that there’s a funding problem is that it will require more taxes, which, let’s face it – no one wants to see more taxes. The crucial thing to remember is that if the Highway Trust Fund is disbanded, our highways will begin to deteriorate even more and become unsafe for individuals and families to drive on.

For the moment, the Highway Trust Fund is patched and will have enough money to take it through May of 2015. The question is what will happen to it afterwards. There are a few different ideas and propositions right now. One is to start allowing states to add tolls to freeways for construction purposes only. Another is to raise the fuel tax to make it easier to pay for the necessary repairs that the highways need. Either way, it’s important that the Highway Trust Fund continues to exist in order to keep road construction workers employed as well as to keep our roads safe to drive on! If you want to learn more, have an idea, or simply want to stand behind the Highway Trust Fund, please write your local congressional representative.
