What Is Road Reconstruction?

Road reconstruction is a part of the asphalt paving cycle. Here’s more about it.

Roads seem to always be there or under construction. Unfortunately, roads don’t last forever; throughout their lifespan, which can last many decades, they need ongoing maintenance. Asphalt can form cracks and potholes easily over just a few years, and at some point, surface repairs aren’t enough. That’s where road reconstruction comes in. What is road reconstruction?

What Is Road Reconstruction?

Road reconstruction is the complete removal of an existing road from the foundation up and its replacement. The new road could be the same or different from the previous one in design, the goal being the most safety and efficiency. Due to the nature of the project, the construction work takes longer than other asphalt maintenance, repair, and paving projects.

Road Reconstruction vs. Road Rehabilitation

Road reconstruction and road rehabilitation are similar but different. Simply put, road reconstruction is the complete replacement of a road with the same or a different design. Meanwhile, road rehabilitation is the repair of a road to a greater or lesser extent. Roads with significant potholes and cracks can still have solid foundations, in which case, road rehabilitation would be appropriate.

Reasons for Reconstructing Roads

End of Road Lifespan

When is road reconstruction absolutely necessary? All roads need replacing at some point, even down to the foundational level. Even though roads seem like they can last forever, foundational issues can and eventually will happen. Road reconstruction is the safest course of action.

Improving Design Safety and Efficiency

Even if the road has not completely broken down, its design could have proven to be inefficient. Even professional road designs can prove to have imperfections, such as confusing traffic directions, difficult turns or curves, and more. Some road reconstructions involve expanding lanes or adding roundabouts.

Underground Utility Repair

The problem might not even be the road. It could be the utilities under the road. If a water main, electrical line, or sewer pipe breaks, it could take removing the road above the breakage to fix the problem.

Severe Damage

Severe road damage could also result from environmental or other forces. When the damage gets down to the foundational level, road reconstruction is the answer.
