How Do You Fix Potholes?

pothole in road

Potholes are annoying. Here’s how we fix them.

Potholes are one of the worst things that can happen to roads and parking lots. They are unsightly and make driving dangerous. You can’t be sure if driving over one will send your vehicle’s wheels out of alignment or worse. How do you fix potholes? If you need an asphalt contractor, then you can leave it to Reliable Contracting to use one of these four effective methods.

Cold Patching for Temporary Fixes

Cold patching uses cold-mix asphalt to fill potholes. It does not require special equipment or heating to apply, and it is the least expensive pothole repair method. The problem is that cold patch asphalt has the shortest lifespan and is only a temporary fix. However, it is a lifesaver when urgent pothole repair is needed in winter, when traditional asphalt mix won’t cure properly.

Hot Mix Patching

Hot mix patching uses traditional hot mix asphalt to fill potholes. Asphalt contractors create and heat the asphalt mix, bring it to the jobsite, pour it into the pothole, and compact it with a small compactor or a roller, depending on the pothole’s size. This method is best for minor potholes that don’t affect the surrounding pavement’s condition.

Full-Depth Pothole Patching

Full-depth pothole patching involves cutting out the entire deteriorated area and replacing it with new pavement. The damage could be more or less deep. Full-depth pothole patching is the most permanent way to fix potholes of all.

Infrared Asphalt Pothole Repairs

Infrared asphalt repair works by softening the existing asphalt with heat and reworking it so that it is as good as new. This method does away with the need for new materials and their costs, and works well for asphalt cracks and potholes. It is possible to use the infrared repair method whether it is summer or winter, making it a practical and cost-effective choice.

Preventing Costly Potholes

Routine asphalt maintenance will prevent potholes from forming in the first place. At the very least, you will not have to pay for widespread damage. Routine asphalt crack filling and sealcoating keep the asphalt surface watertight, free from the moisture that causes potholes to grow wider.
