This year, Reliable Contracting once again partnered with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to host a group of teachers for a tour of the Waugh Chapel Asphalt Plant and Aggregate Recycling Facility. The teachers, who were part of a continuing education class at UMES, were presented with a quick lesson on Reliable’s role in the community and the basics of the construction industry before going on a tour. This collaboration with the teachers of the UMES course is part of Reliable’s continuing commitment to investing in the future of the construction industry and giving back to local communities by supporting local educators.

The UMES Continuing Education Course

As part of the UMES American Industry and Global Competition course, educators go on tours of different businesses and learn about how each company operates using various classroom-taught skills. Teachers also learn about the companies’ policies, philosophies, capital requirements, community responsibilities, and more. All of this is analyzed through the lens of the free enterprise system. This gives educators the tools they need to ensure that their students are properly equipped to succeed after graduation.

Teaching the Teachers

Reliable hosted the class of educators and gave a presentation on what services the company offers, company values, the personnel challenges that are faced within the construction industry, and the qualities that Reliable looks for in employees. After the presentation, the teachers were treated to lunch and took a tour of the Waugh Chapel Asphalt Plant. There, Reliable’s tour guide could explain what exactly goes into the asphalt production and aggregate recycling processes. The teachers toured the plant on a bus which was borrowed from Truckin’ 4 Troops, a local charitable organization.

An Investment in the Construction Professionals of the Future

Reliable Contracting has a long history of working with local organizations to help prepare future generations for careers in construction. By introducing educators to the world of asphalt paving and construction, Reliable is able to help teachers with students of all ages prepare their students for careers in the construction industry. Armed with this new knowledge, teachers from the UMES American Industry and Global Competition course can give their students the skills they need to become asphalt paving and contracting professionals in the future.
