June is National Safety Month

safety awarenessSummer is a busy time for everyone. There are many outdoor activities to do such as swimming, hiking, grilling and more. Summer is also a very dangerous time, primarily because of all of these activities. It’s important for people to be aware of safety precautions to take during the summer months,  which is why this year a bonus week was added to Safety Awareness Month devoted to summer safety awareness. It’s still important to be aware of more than just summer fun safety this time of year; each week in June is devoted to a different safety awareness topic:

  1. Prevention of prescription drug use
  2. Stop slips, trips, and falls
  3. Awareness of surroundings
  4. Distracted driving awareness

The last two weeks in particular are important to us at Reliable because our people in the field need to be aware of their surroundings at all times and rely heavily on drivers paying attention to what’s going on around them. Driving distracted in general is dangerous, but it’s especially worrisome around roadwork. Lanes may be blocked off, traffic patterns change, and if the roadwork is active, there are frequently people on or near the roadway. There are a few things that you can do to actively avoid distracted driving.

  • Put your cell phone down – If you absolutely must take a call or send a text, pull over or use voice to text applications. Never use a handheld device while you’re driving; not only is it dangerous, it’s against the law in Maryland.
  • Avoid turning around – Children in the backseat can be a dangerous distraction. Turning to scold them or break up a fight can instantly turn fatal for either you or an employee working on the road. Either pull over or wait until you reach your destination to address the problem.
  • Focus on the road – Life is busy and it’s not always easy to get everything done in the morning before work, but it’s important to avoid doing your makeup, eating, or making phone calls on the road. Set aside that time for commuting. Be aware of your surroundings and pay close attention in work zones.

Those of us who work on the road know the importance of safety and we hope that you’ll join us in trying to make roadside work a little bit safer. After all, this year’s Safety Month slogan is “Safety: it takes all of us.” Safety is truly a team sport. Working together to ensure safe roadways is the best solution to create a better work environment for those who strive to make the roads safer to drive on for you.
