Will Transportation Be A Top Priority for Governor Hogan?

Though he is still in the early months of his first term as governor, Larry Hogan has already made it a point to announce the high-priority goals of his administration. Though perennial issues such as the health of the Chesapeake Bay, education, and taxes have gained a lot of attention in the press, another important one has been brought to light: transportation. Read on to find out more about the governor’s plan for transportation in Maryland!

Transportation in MD State of the State Address Singles Out Transportation as Key Issue

In the State of the State address Hogan gave last month, he named his top ten priorities for Maryland; among them was improving transportation. He cited the drastic cuts that have been made in the past few years to infrastructure and road maintenance funds, including the money that had been redirected from the Transportation Trust Fund. His solution? An important addition to the 2016 fiscal year’s budget.

Hogan Projects Major Boost to Highway User Revenue

Next year’s budget, according to Hogan, will include a measure intended to increase the Highway User Revenues by up to $25 million. Counties and cities alike will be able to dedicate funding to road improvement projects with the help of this measure.

Transportation Secretary Named By Hogan Approved By Senate

Earlier this week, Hogan’s appointment for Transportation Secretary, Pete Rahn, was met with unanimous approval by the Senate committee tasked with questioning him. Rahn had been described by Governor Hogan as “the best highway builder in the entire country,” and he will have many vital decisions to make regarding the future of transportation in the state, from highway improvement projects to the Red and Purple Light Rail lines’ construction.

Improving the roadways and highways in the state will hopefully continue to be a priority for the Hogan administration, as it is for companies like Reliable Contracting. Check back in with the Reliable blog for more updates on transportation in Maryland as the year progresses!
