Winter Asphalt Paving: Is it too Cold to pave in the Baltimore Area?

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Reliable_Feb4

It is winter. That means it is impossible to pave, right? Wrong! We have found that many of our clients have the same common misconception that asphalt paving cannot happen in cold weather. While cold weather paving is more difficult and has many more challenges, it is possible.

Cold Weather Paving Challenges

  1. Transportation: The main challenge is transportation: getting asphalt to the job site and compacting it before it cools. This requires a well-organized and highly-skilled asphalt contractor.
  2. Manpower: Cold weather paving requires a lot of man power to get the job done right before the asphalt cools. This is why you should use qualified asphalt companies.
  3. Asphalt Plants: Most asphalt plants stop production in mid-December. Reliable contracting company keeps there plant running most of the winter.

The Solution: Trust Reliable Contracting!

Reliable Contracting Company is a full-service commercial and residential asphalt paving contractor. We offer a wide range of services, from production and installation of hot and cold-mix asphalt to asphalt patching, milling, and crack filling. But that’s not all. We also offer parking lot striping, signage, parking bumpers and speed bumps.

Oh yea, and did we mention that Reliable Contracting operates three hot-mix asphalt plants in Anne Arundel County? This affords us unequalled reach for commercial asphalt projects in the Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington D.C. metropolitan areas.

The New Traffic Pattern at Arundel Mills

Saturday, September 15th, 2012

Reliable Contracting recently completed construction on Maryland’s first Diverging Diamond Intersection (DDI) at the junction of Arundel Mills Blvd. and Route 295. This new DDI replaces two existing roundabouts in hopes of improving traffic flow after the opening of the Maryland Live! Casino at the Arundel Mills Mall.

The $5 million project was funded entirely by the Cordish Companies and developed in association with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) and Anne Arundel County.

Benefits of the Diverging Diamond Intersection

  • DDIs can typically accommodate twice as many left turns per hour as traditional interchange designs.
  • DDIs are safe as they have fewer points at which vehicle paths intersect.
  • The diamond pattern reduces the number of traffic signal phases.
  • The DDI eliminates the need for exclusive left turn lanes to and from the southbound lanes of the Baltimore Washington Parkway.
  • These traffic improvements will also accommodate future growth planned in the region.

Storm Water Management: Contributing Factors and what you need to know

Friday, August 17th, 2012

When it comes to storm water management, there are several contributing factors that you need to be aware of, factors that can directly affect maintenance of storm water systems. These contributing factors include:

  • Aesthetics: A storm water management system cannot be an eyesore, especially if it is located in a community. A storm water management system needs to seamlessly blend into the environment.
  • Landscaping: Certain types of vegetation can directly affect the performance of storm water management systems.
  • Upstream Conditions: Erosion and high traffic areas located upstream can add significantly to the amount of sediment.
  • Cost: Enough money has to be allocated for the regular maintenance of storm water facilities.
  • Safety: Because these storm water management systems involve the storage of large amounts of water and because they are most often located in rural areas, safety (signage, fencing, etc.) needs to be of the upmost concern.
  • Professional Maintenance: Poorly designed, improperly constructed, and inadequately maintained utility infrastructures can lead to major environmental damage from flooding and erosion.  Storm water management and the maintenance of storm water management facilities requires the expert knowledge of a professional, like Reliable Contracting.

Factors Affecting Maintenance of Storm Water Management

FAQs about Storm Water Management & the Construction Industry

Friday, August 10th, 2012

What is Storm Water?

Storm water refers to water from a number of different sources, including rain, melted snow, and any other form of precipitation that comes into direct contact with the ground.

What is Storm Water Management?

Storm water management includes all functions associated with planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, financing and regulating the facilities that collect, store, control and convey storm water.

Why is Storm Water Management Important?

Because water cannot naturally reach the soil through many of the manmade structures we have erected, including roads and buildings, the storm water is forced to flow through manmade drainage systems, picking up toxic debris and other pollutants in the process.

What are Storm Chambers?

Storm chambers are manmade storm water management systems designed to do the following:

  1. Retention: Storm chambers allow construction sites to hold storm water to for proper disposal.
  2. Detention: Detention refers to temporary retention. In this instance, storm water is held temporarily to allow construction personnel to slowly spread it to other places and prevent flooding.
  3. Conveyance: Storm chambers can be used to transfer storm water from a construction site to a more appropriate area.
  4. Recharge: Recharge is an important part of the storm water management process, in which water from the surface works its way into the subsurface, replenishing groundwater supplies.
  5. Reuse: Storm water management system allow storm water to be recycled and reused in efficient ways.

Highlighting a Reliable Contracting Business Partner: Alpha Graphics

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Norm Myers and Alpha Graphics (formerly Revere Printing), the printing company that Reliable Contracting uses for most of its printing, were recently featured in an Odenton Patch article, ‘I Want To See How It Turns Out’. Alpha Graphics is also co-members of the West County Chamber of Commerce with Reliable.

Norm Myers and the Odenton Town Center Plan Oversight Committee

Norm, who is 73-years-old, is the longest-running of the oversight committee, having helped plan Odenton for more than 20 years. And until recently, Norm had never missed a minute of a single meeting. That was until recently, when Norm excused himself politely and walked out of an oversight committee meeting that had reached well into its fourth hour.

But Norm did not leave in protest; Norm left because he had surgery in the morning and needed his rest. In fact, it was amazing that Norm was at the meeting at all.

“Norm is old school,” said Joe Gorman, a former committee member and president of the Greater Odenton Improvement Association (GOIA). “He’s always had the best interests of the town center in mind. He’s always wanted to make it look good and have good amenities.”

Norm has lived in Odenton or Gambrills for most of his life. And it has been his desire to see the community grow and expand. It was for this reason that Norm helped form the oversight committee. But he not only wanted to ensure that Odenton got developed, but Norm also wanted to ensure that residents had a say in how Odenton got developed.

“He’s been Mr. Odenton for a generation and has been active in everything,” said GOIA Vice President David Tibbets of Norm. “It’s on and on and he does it all well and still makes a living.”

Recently, however, Norm has been slowed by cancer treatments. Still, he goes to work each and every day and has yet to skip an entire meeting of the town center committee.

“The only reason I stuck with the committee for so long is that I wanted to see it completed,” said Norm. “Whether I’ll live long enough to see it completed, I don’t know. I’d be 100 if it took as many years as I’ve been involved with it so far.”

We thank you Norm for your dedication to our community!
