What to Look for in a Commercial Contractor

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Every building project begins with one very important decision; choosing the right commercial construction contractor. Choose the wrong commercial contractor and your entire project suffers (not to mention your wallet). Choose the right contractor and the sky is the limit!

So when searching for the ideal commercial contracting candidate, there are several attributes to look for. These include:

Business-like Demeanor: In any professional setting, even in the construction industry, it is important to carry one’s self in a professional and business-like manner. This means showing up on time, adhering to the agreed upon construction schedule, remaining organized, and more.

Communication: A good working relationship is important. You need your contractor to understand your vision and your goals and to take your project as seriously as you do. Without good communication, you may begin to feel like you are no longer a part of your own project.

Experience, Skills, and Reputation: Construction, especially commercial construction can be a very complex task. Skills and especially experience are key attributes in the commercial construction industry. Furthermore, be sure that your potential contractor has experience in the type of construction work you need done.

Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals and recommendations. These are great indicators of both experience and skill level.

Business Practices: Ask to see a certificate of insurance to ensure your potential contractor has the necessary coverage (including liability insurance and workers’ compensation). Also call the state licensing board to check on your contractor’s license. Was it ever suspended? If so, why? Are their any claims against this contractor? If so, what?

If you have any questions or if you have a construction project that you need completed right the first time, please contact Reliable Contracting by calling 410-987-0313 or visit our website.
