Reliable Employee Health Initiative Update and Tips

health initiativeOur employees have been participating in our “Eat Well, Live Well” challenge for a little over a month now and are off to a great start. The current “Eat Well, Live Well” challenge is called “Cups and Steps.” Check out our May 28th blog to learn a little bit more about what our participants have been doing to learn to eat healthier. Tracking is a big part of this initiative. The more that our employees track their food intake, the better they can see where they do well and what causes them problems. We encourage those employees who haven’t signed up yet to go ahead and join those who have! We’d also like to invite you to try the program out at home. Feel free to let us know how it’s helping you on our Facebook page!

Along with the “Eat Well, Live Well” initiative, we like to encourage a regular exercise routine for our employees. The following 5 facts are great for getting motivated to be fit and healthy! We’ve shared these 5 facts, courtesy of NextLogical, with our employees and we’d like to pass them on to you!

  1. You don’t have to run a marathon – The majority of people that you meet would rather walk a mile than run 26. It isn’t necessary to work out every day or for long periods of time to reap the benefits of exercise. Walking 3-5 days per week will give you almost the exact same protection against premature death as working out hard for 90 minutes 3-5 days per week. Enjoying light exercise is a great way to begin getting healthy!
  2. Running won’t ruin healthy knees – You do have to be careful about running. Making sure that your posture is good, that you’re well hydrated, and that you’re healthy enough to run are all important. But you’re not likely to make healthy knees fail by running. If you already have a bad knee, that’s one thing, but running with healthy knees can actually keep them healthier.
  3. Use music to get you moving – A British study shows that the type of music you listen to can contribute to your workout. You’re more likely to move faster if the beat in the music you listen to is up-tempo. Make a workout playlist of songs that you know will make you want to move!
  4. Stretching isn’t helpful – At least static stretching isn’t, which is what most people do. Holding a stretch won’t loosen up your muscles or get them ready for vigorous exercise. You’re better off to go through a range of stretches and continuously move. Doing a yoga sequence or jumping jacks is a good way to get your muscles warmed up.
  5. It’s never too late – You can choose to start getting fit at any age and it will still benefit you. It’s a great idea to start young and make a lifelong habit of it, but exercise is useful even as you get older. It’s important to start off slow and build to faster, more strenuous exercise over time. You should also talk to your doctor before beginning any type of diet or exercise routine.
